This 400 size reel is a powerhouse, the Okuma Komodo SS is built to withstand extreme conditions and big fish. The main gear is stainless steel rather than brass and is 54mm which is massive for a 400 size reel. The Shimano Tranx is only 50mm and it's a much larger reel. Even though it has a ton of power, it still is available in a 7:1 ratio which brings in 38" per crank. This reel would be ideal for s, , and hard baits like the .
It features 3 carbon fiber lightly greased drag washers and boasts 30 lbs of drag! Okuma uses synthetic drag grease on all gears and also on the bearing seat for the main shaft to prevent corrosion. At only 16 oz it is significantly less than it's similar counterparts and the spool holds 250 yards of 65 pound Power Pro. Unlike many similar reels, the Komodo SS offers a clicker which is great for slow trolling or seabass fishing at the islands.
Unlike the Daiwa Lexa 400, it uses a centrifugal brake system by moving small pins in our out to control the cast. It's also lower to the rod and shorter than the Lexa which reduces the weight and feels better in the palm of your hand. The level wind does not disengage so when fighting a big fish the line doesn't have to pull at extreme angles. One simple screw and a twist of the side plate reveals the braking system. The 120mm handle is comfortable and easy to grip but not cumbersome.
